Commonwealth Games 2018: Australian boxer guaranteed medal at home Games — without throwing a punch

The fortunate Taylah Robertson is already ensured a bronze medal or better

An Australian boxer at the Commonwealth Games is already guaranteed to win a medal – and all without throwing a punch.

Taylah Robertson is one of only seven boxers who has entered the women’s 51kg category, and the 19-year-old has received a bye into the semi-finals.

In boxing events both losing semi-finalists win bronze, meaning that Robertson will walk away with a medal even if she loses her one and only bout.

Robertson, whose semi-final is scheduled for 13 April, wrote on Facebook ahead of the event: “Can’t wait to get in the ring and represent Australia on such a big sporting stage.”

Her coach meanwhile added that Robertson has benefited from the “luck of the draw”.

“For some reason the numbers in that division were down. When you look at some of the boys divisions, some of them have 24 to 26 boxers there,” Mark Evans said.

“We’ve got a guaranteed bronze but I’m tipping that colour might change.”
