Our Top Picks

Finding the best red wines for Christmas Day, or for parties over the festive season, is not always the easiest task. Most people have their favourites and tend to stick to them, however, there are so many great options out there.

From big oaky reds to lighter, earthy pinot noirs, getting it right for your guests and family at this time of year means looking for accessible wines with balance, and a touch of oak and spice.

Christmas is about rich food, so looking for wines with acidity is important. Wines from vineyards at high altitudes and cooler wine-growing regions tend to have balance and acidity that will cut through buttery mince pies and rich trimmings, such as pigs in blankets.

Choosing a selection of traditional wines from well-known regions such as Médoc and Tuscany, alongside newer styles, can help make sure that most people are happy.

How we tested

We looked for versatile red wines to suit all tastes and palates – reds that work when served at the Christmas table and when sipped by the fireside.

We taste-tested a number of red wines from different regions, as well as bottles made from different grapes. The wines were tested at room temperature, directly after the bottle was opened and then once again about an hour later. Keep reading for the best red wines to devour.

The verdict: Red wines

While Christmas can often be about excess, there are some affordable red wines that will fit most Christmas meals and parties perfectly. Mendoza malbecs such as the Argento offer good value for money and pack a punch flavour wise.

When looking for wines that pair well with most dishes served at Christmas lunch, a few years of ageing is ideal, so having an older vintage will ensure the spiced and dried-fruit flavours historically associated with Christmas – opt for the Ribera Del Duero and Saint Julien.

With the choice of traditional and newer, fun styles, there are some great options, with Priorat offering spiciness and fruit-forward flavours, while the Selfridges grenache also has a fruitiness to it.

However, if you want to splash out this festive season and impress the in-laws, the brunello is a great bottle of red to serve on the big day. What a Christmas treat!
